Okay, no preamble, let’s get straight into the numbers.
Beers
There isn’t actually a huge variation here. Your typical pint of beer or lager contains around 230kcal and for a 330ml bottle it’s 135kcal. That’s equivalent to a Mars bar (51g) or a Cadbury’s Creme egg.
Brand | Strength (%) | Pint (568ml) | Bottle (330ml) |
Kronenbourg | 5.0 | 244 | 142 |
Corona | 4.5 | 239 | 139 |
Peroni | 5.1 | 235 | 137 |
San Miguel | 5 | 235 | 137 |
Budweiser | 4.5 | 232 | 135 |
Cobra | 4.8 | 228 | 132 |
Sol | 4.4 | 228 | 132 |
Heineken | 5.0 | 227 | 132 |
Stella Artois | 4.8 | 227 | 132 |
Becks | 4.8 | 226 | 131 |
Guinness | 4.1 | 210 | 122 |
Carlsberg Pilsner | 3.8 | 210 | 122 |
Amstel | 4.1 | 176 | 102 |
Wine
The number of calories in wine varies by strength, because the higher the alcohol content, the more calories. Reds (Merlot, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon) are generally stronger than Whites (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay) but as you see from the table below, the difference is marginal. As a rough rule, a bottle of wine will be around 600kcal, the same as a large bag of Maynard’s Wine Gums (190g).
Alcohol | Strength (%) | Medium Glass (175ml) | Large Glass (250ml) | Bottle (750ml) |
Red Wine | 13.5 | 146 | 208 | 625 |
White Wine | 13 | 141 | 201 | 605 |
Rose Wine | 12.5 | 138 | 197 | 590 |
Spirits
Much like beers and wines, spirits are pretty similar across the board. The one exception being Sambuca, which is 35% sugar and far more calories per shot than its counterparts. A 25ml shot of spirits is around 55 calories, the same as you’d get in a Custard Cream.
Alcohol | Strength (%) | Single (25ml) | Double (50ml) |
Sambuca | 38 | 82 | 164 |
Tequila | 40 | 55 | 110 |
Whiskey | 40 | 55 | 110 |
Gin | 40 | 52 | 104 |
Rum | 40 | 52 | 104 |
Vodka | 40 | 51 | 102 |
Brandy | 40 | 50 | 100 |
