Burn More Calories By Standing Instead Of Sitting

Stand on your commute

Did you know adults sit for an average of eleven hours a day?

Beyond our desks, we tend to sit during meals, while watching TV and for most of us commuting to (and from) work.

This prolonged sitting has proven to increase chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes and obesity, even for fit individuals.

If you can spend 60 minutes standing when you would otherwise be sitting, you can improve your health in the long term.

For those of you commuting by bus or train every day, consider standing for that time. If it’s practical, try standing during your lunch hour. You could also stand while watching TV, or better still… go for a walk instead!

How Many Calories Will I Burn By Standing?

Depending on your body-weight, you can burn between 30 to 60 extra calories an hour standing instead of sitting.

Doesn’t seem like much? It’s sweat-free exercise and based on 60 minutes a day you’ll burn up to 13,500 calories a year. That’s 4lbs of fat.

How many calories you burn while standing depends on your body-weight.

Example Calorie Burn

If you weigh 50kg (7 st 9 lbs) you’ll burn an extra 30 calories an hour.

An extra hour standing every day burns 11,000 calories a year (3.1 lbs of fat).

If you weigh 75kg (11 st 11 lbs) you’ll burn an extra 45 calories an hour.

An extra hour standing every day burns 16,500 calories a year (4.7 lbs of fat).

If you weigh 100kg (15 st 4 lbs) you’ll burn an extra 60 calories an hour.

An extra hour standing every day burns 22,000 calories a year (6.3 lbs of fat).

Next time you have the opportunity, choose to stay on your feet!
